hello, hello, fellow inkpoppers!
you guys can call me sila or master of the universe, whichever you choose. =) inkpop has kind of taken over much of my free time lately, what with me running the weekly writer’s challenge (more on that later) and participating in la knights two fabulous contests (play the scales and twilight revamped), so swaps aren’t happening. currently i’m just a silent reader reading whatever i please.
as most of you know, recently our profiles went all haywire and funky, so i’ve redone mine and in an effort to throw in my information about myself, my writing, and the weekly writer’s challenge. have fun reading it!
((stuff about me))
currently i’m nineteen and i live in gorgeous, sunny california. honestly i think it’s the best state ever, but as i lived here all my live i’m pretty sure i’m a little biased. writing is what i’m most passionate about and reading is my all time favorite pastime. i read a lot and i read fast, but that doesn’t mean i review fast, hahaha. i love swapping book reviews, tricks, tips, tools of the trade, and just talking shop. perhaps the only thing i love as much as reading and writing is cooking and eating. i’m total foodie and am considering going to culinary school and becoming a food writer (in addiction to pursuing my dream of being a publishing author).
okay, so here is just some random stuff about me:
-my favorite cartoons are avatar: the last airbender, batman, and the justice league
-i’ve read all the twilight books and think they pretty much suck, but i’m team jacob
-i think the twilight movies are better than the books because i like taylor lautner
-my favorite foods are sushi, fries, noodles, cheeseburgers, potatoes, bacon, and fudge brownies
-i don’t have a favorite book and think it’s weird when people can actually pick one
-my dog’s name is ninja and even though he’s a shrimp he’s still fierce
-harry potter is the reason i got into reading and writing, so thanks jk rowling
-my ipod touch doesn’t go anywhere without me and vice versa
-i don’t really like even numbers . . . like four . . . yeesh.
-my favorite colors are cerulean, bronze, silver, and black
-the golden state warriors suck but i’ll be a fan till i die
-i’m going to be famous someday so if you ask me for my autograph now i won’t mind
((weekly writer’s challenge))
so first thing i’d like to address is the weekly writer’s challenge. basically every other week i post a challenge in the forums that is open to all inkpoppers. a panel of judges reviews the entries and a challenge champion is chosen. that champion gets a nice little set of prizes: 1) a free harpercollins book of your choice, 2) a free pick for any one of your projects, 3) a profile and project feature in the forums and on the wwc profile page. the wwc does have official backing from inkpop, so the free book is totally legit.

((my works in progress))
alright, so the next thing on my check list is to just tell you guys what i’m working on. here’s a list of my wips (works in progress) in no particular order:
1. gods of egypt (book series; action adventure)
a. the series centers around three teens who find out that they’re really gods, specifically ancient egyptian gods. they’ve been sent back to earth for the sole purpose of putting a stop to their enemy’s plans to destroy the modern world. however, when one of the teens finds out that she was previously married to their enemy things get a little complicated. the book is really more interested than how i described it, and as soon as i think of a better “pitch” i’ll replace this one.
2. fried (short story; vampire comedy)
a. fried is about becca royale, a chef living in san francisco, who is desperately trying to make it in the culinary world. and as if being a woman in a professional kitchen isn’t tough enough, she inadvertently gets turned into a vampire. be warned that my vampires do not sparkle, do not look mind bogglingly sexy, and do not drink animal blood. i’ve reverted back to the classic idea of what vampires are meant to be like; all the way down to even having mine be adverse to garlic. the idea behind this story is give the vampire phenomenon a comedic boost. this is my first foray into the comedy genre, so hopefully it’ll garner a few laughs.
3. halden and geraldine (fairytale anthology entry; short story; steampunk)
a. this is my piece for the “path” fairytale anthology that is being put together by la knight. i’m going to be doing a remake of the “hansel and gretel” story, but with some major changes. for starters i have changed the genre to steampunk and renamed all the characters. there is no gingerbread house, and in its stead is a chocolate factory owned by the witch who is now named virdisa. along with owning the chocolate factory she also has a son named peeter who has quite the creepy crush on geraldine. the story begins with halden and geraldine being left on the streets by their stepmother who considers them unnecessary burdens that can no longer be afforded. the children are then taken by the witch and forced into working in her chocolate factory along with all the other workers who are children the witch stole from other families. details are subject to change as i write.
4. fish tears (play the scales contest entry; short story; fantasy)
a. la knight is hosting the play the scales contest that it all about mermaids. my entry has mermaids as the villains, who reach through puddles of water to steal human children. because mermaids can’t have human children they have to steal them from land, and the way they accomplish this is by using portals that are created when they cry. however when they do manage to ensnare a child, the child drowns because it can’t breathe under water. eventually someone witnesses one of the children be dragged through one of the mysterious puddle portals. when the witness recounts what happened no one believes him and he’s sent to a mental institution. yep, so that’s the gist of it. lots of kinks to work out though.
5. anti|heroes (novel; superhero fiction)
a. this is something i’ve been working on for a while now, but i haven’t gotten any real writing done for it. mostly what i have is a series of character profiles and a growing list of plot points. however i do plan on making this into a full novel, only because i don’t really see any superhero fiction novels. the main idea though is that the story focuses on superhero quentin cavendish (still searching for his hero name). what i have planned to happen is that a new villain comes into play; a corporation who produces “made to order” villains. essentially the company makes clones of superheroes and then genetically modifies them and stuff. it’s complicated.
6. souls of gods (plot bunny)
a. i randomly started thinking of superheroes and how they function in societies and how some fictional societies would see them as “gods”. eventually i got the idea that maybe heroes are the way they are because of an excess of soul. they just have so much soul in them that they develop these abilities no one else can have. these so called heroes start to rise up in their societies until they are practically worshipped. that’s all i have for now.
7. two cities (plot bunny)
a. the two cities of soluna and nocturna have always been at odds. while soluna basks in the warmth of the sun and eternal day, nocturna remains underground trapped in a cold, eternal night. the inhabitants of these cities believe that they have always hated each other, not knowing that at their inception they were meant to be two halves of the same whole. the solarians with their golden brown skin and non-magical abilities see the nocturnians as pale faced, inhuman threats to their normalcy. the nocturnians who long ago were forced underground because of their mutated features and heightened abilities are tired of being treated like animals. when a war between the two cities breaks out there’s no telling who will be the victor, or if anyone will even survive the bloodshed and chaos. i’ve currently got three main characters for this; a set of twin nocturnian brothers named nix and nox, and their younger sister nor.
