I have had two addictions in life--soy chai and literature. The former was short-lived, and after months of insomnia and sugar/caffeine crashes, I weaned myself off the thick, creamy, delicately-spiced, mouthwatering beverage. But wean myself off of Microsoft Word? Are you KIDDING ME? Ever since I was four years old, I've been spinning elaborate worlds onto paper. Since then, I've given birth to--count 'em--twelve novels (some of which should probably be labeled novellas), at least a hundred pages worth of short stories, and several towers of poetry. Thanks to my numerous planets in Leo (and speaking of that, I'm a raving astrology lunatic, so if you ever want to chat, tell me your sun sign first!) I'm also a wannabe slam poet. I haven't come across that many opportunities, but I participated in a pretty big event in April, where I got to slam my poem "Goodbye, Pants" to a large audience. Now THAT was divine.
Did I mention that I'm seventeen? One semester into my freshman year, I dropped out of that menacing, vacuous institution called high school, and I've been full-time at the local community college ever since. It's been fantastic for me. I got to slam "Ode to a Stale Pastry" and "Ode to Burnt Toast" in front of a large chunk of the student body--that was two years ago, and people are still talking about them! I've also had the opportunity of working with well-known poets Joan Logghe and Miriam Sagan. I'm currently the fiction editor of The Santa Fe Review, a literary magazine supervised by Miriam. By the way, I make incredible pancakes. And after I make them, I punch holes through them and string them up with sparkly ribbon. They're called pancake pendants. They first happened on a delirious morning with my best friend, and they're still hanging up around the house. They're one and a half years old by now.
