about me

thanks for visiting my little corner of the universe. stay a while, you won't regret it. :)

*note*-i have work basically all summer. i'll be going on after work and on weekends for swaps, but believe me, i will be pretty beat. i'll try to get to swaps as fast as i can, but i can't make any promises. just be patient--i will get all my reads done!

*another note*: i am no longer accepting friend requests. there's no need for 500+ friends on this site, and a majority of the people who have friended me are barely every online. i'm not being standoffish--i just don't want to clog my news feed up anymore.

=====================================================================
i've been published in school newspapers and literary magazines, nothing very prominent. unless you consider an uncredited blurb about toy story mania in the unofficial guide to walt disney world prominent. okay, and a letter in weird nj. when i was like eight.

but, just like everyone else here, i'm one of those crazed people who spends hours on end writing and constantly daydreams about dialogues and plot twists. like most aspiring authors, i am constantly in the midst of a mental breakdown, but unlike most published authors, i don't drink myself out of it.

=====================================================================
swap reads: i like them. send me a message! just tell me the name of what you want me to read, you don't need to give me the first paragraph of the book or anything. i get conned out of swaps a lot, which is really annoying, so if you're planning to con me don't even bother. i'll read anything, and i try to be honest when commenting. so send me a request!!

i had some short stories/book teasers posted, but they're set to private for now, until i get "roses" starred. so just be patient--after roses is starred, i'll debut "starved" as a book (it just needs a few hundred more words). i'll keep updating "roses" even after it makes the top picks--not the whole book, but maybe to the end of the 2nd part or something like that.

=====================================================================
note: if i've offered you a swap, it'd be so much easier for me if you could go first. your read will get done faster that way, and i've been burned too many times.

people who owe me reads:
-dna girl
-ambeerocker
-buddie ann
-piper cleaveland
-elanorlawrence (for starved)
-arejay4
-probably a lot more than this, but whatever.

other reads:

things you should know about me:
-i'm weird.
-i'm easily amused.
-i'm a major history buff.
-i play clarinet, and have been for 6 years!
-i am a harry potter nerd and proud of it! twilight will forever suck compared to harry. there's no debate about that.
-someday, i want to be a copywriter or a screenwriter.
-i just got back from new orleans and it is officially my favorite place. i would love to go to college there.
-as you can see from my profile picture, i love where the wild things are. max is my guy. :)
-i'm a ballet dancer, which surprises a lot of people, because most of them have never met a ballet dancer who wears jeans & converse every day, listens to green day, and is a major smartass. i like surprising people, it keeps them on their toes.
-i read about inkpop in the new york times, which likely brands me as the biggest loser ever.
-i'm irish and italian, which basically means you don't want to piss me off.
-i'm a die-hard mets fan. boo yankees and phillies!
-i don't read a lot of ya fiction--i'm on a bit of a classics kick at the moment.
-i'm a tied-and-true jersey girl! and no, i do not know snooki or the situation. they're from new york and they need to find their own shore.
-i'm an atheist, and i'm a democrat. i don't care what your opinion in that matter is.

about my books:

the roses of cooraclare: (posted as a novel)
a historical fiction romance/war/drama set in 1920s ireland, about a young woman (sinead) who becomes a courier for the ira after her brother and boyfriend become involved in the war as well. for those of you who have read it and made it the most popular historical fiction book on inkpop--thank you so much. you're all amazing and i wish i could make you all cupcakes or something. i created a fanpage on facebook for it, there's a link to it in my websites.

the revolutionary: (posted as a short story... go check it out!)
this is the companion novel (not sequel--there is no sequel) to "roses". it's told from the perspective of cahal, sinead's brother, who becomes the commander of the ira column in cooraclare after the death of padraig maroney. this book begins in 1916 (in the aftermath of the easter rising when he joins the ira), and will end in 1922, after the death of michael collins. it'll explore cahal's relationship with his wife molly, his perspective on sinead (you know there's one), and the politics behind the war. i'm excited about this one, i'm basically writing this and "roses" at the same time, which i wouldn't really suggest cuz it majorly screws with your sleep patterns.

starved: (posted as a short story)
a historical fiction drama set in 1980s northern ireland, told from the perspective of shane laverty, a young man living in belfast who reluctantly joins the ira after the death of his father. he travels to the countryside to fight and eventually finds himself in prison, involved in the hunger strike of 1981 organized by bobby sands. it will also focus on the tumultuous relationship between him and maggie, his neurotic girlfriend who has been thrust into too many difficult decisions. i don't have 10k words for this just yet, but i will soon-ish. i'm also planning a sequel/companion novel, called "sixtysix", which will be maggie's side of the story--from before she meets shane to the end of "starved". i've kinda put this on the backburner for now--i want to get "roses" finished, and that might be a long time from now.

mecca: (not posted)
a drama set in the recent past, about a muslim-american man living in oklahoma with his mother, and how he decides to travel to egypt to find his father after 9/11, along with his white girlfriend. this one is a long way from 10k words.

valiancy (not posted)
a historical fiction drama/crime/noir about a young librarian, marion, living in 1930s chicago. she gets caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and ends up becoming romantically involved with max murphy, a member of the infamous burke bank robbery gang. also a long way from 10k words.

and, coming soon:

sea of ashes
a historical fantasy (i know! fantasy!) about conan, a young fisherman living in ireland just as world war ii begins, and the summer that changes his life. he discovers aisling, a beautiful selkie (a seal-like creature that turns into a human on land), and she lives with his family for a few months, fearing that her selkie husband will come on land to claim her back. it's set on inishmore, one of the aran islands off the western coast of ireland, a very isolated and small place. haven't actually started this one yet, it's just kinda in the brainstorming process. but i will start it soon, i'm mega-pumped about it.

goodnight to the world:
a drama set in the early 2000s, focusing on james carthage, a seasoned news anchor for a dying news network, and ben roth, the young reporter sent to iraq to report on the american invasion. it'll probably be told in alternating viewpoints. will likely involve a hostage situation. i feel like writing about the iraq war, because i'm also tackling 9/11.

lotus:
a psychological thriller, a bit different than my usual stuff. it's set in the fictional city of andreas, a city where everything appears to be perfect but the government is plagued by corruption and greed. but one night, the chief of police is found dead in his apartment. his wife and children are still alive, yet they do not know he is dead and are acting like he is still alive. more incidents like this occur, and diana nguyen, the mayor's daughter, begins to investigate out of curiosity, uncovering a mysterious underground organization bent on returning andreas to the way it was--no matter what it takes. it will combine ripped-from-the-headlines american politics with action and eastern mysticism--lots of buddhism references. the title is a reference to the lotus eaters from "the odyssey". on that note, there's references to "the odyssey" in basically all my works, although it's most prevalent in "starved".

(some of these are just plot bunnies, not really sure where they'll go.)

random one-liner from my writing: (i'll change this every once and a while)

"i swear to god, if i hadn't told my therapist that i would stop making threats like this, i would kill you!"
-maggie o'riordan to andrew mcgowan, her ex-boyfriend, "starved"

The Roses of Cooraclare

by drsheridan

Book: General Fiction, Historical Fiction, Romance

But we never called it war. We called it life.

The English have had a firm grasp around Ireland for as long as Sinead can remember, and even after Ireland declares independence in 1919, life is exactly the way it’s always been in her small village of Cooraclare.

But when the leader of Cooraclare’s IRA chapter is killed, everything changes. The two most important men in her life, her brother Cahal and her sweetheart Declan, join the fight out of support for their fallen leader, and Sinead fears for their lives. But she feels the need to fight for her country’s freedom, after being oppressed for so long, and she decides to join the Cumann na mBan, the women’s league of the IRA. She becomes a courier, carrying not only messages, but the hope of a free, peaceful Ireland.

But the reality of war is a harsh one, one that Sinead will have to discover for herself.

Starved (an excerpt)

by drsheridan

Short Story: , Horror, Historical Fiction, Romance

How far would you go for something you believed in? an excerpt.

Shane Laverty, just a normal kid from Belfast, has never asked much of the world. But it still seems to be screwing him over. His father, a bombmaker for the Provisional IRA, was shot dead, and his mother is going crazy. Shane, nineteen years old, joins the the “Provos” in memory of his father, and leaves Belfast burning behind him.

And when he meets the sweet and musically talented Maggie during his travels through County Armagh, he’s certain that he’s found everything he needs, and The Troubles won’t follow him, even if he is a Provo.

But as the young lovers come of age, tensions will rise in Northern Ireland, and a few wrong decisions will land Shane in Long Kesh, a prison, where he will be forced to make a decision that may change—or end—his life.

Set in Northern Ireland in the 1980s, during the infamous hunger strike organized by Irish patriot Bobby Sands, Starved is a story of war, protest, and the struggle of being in love amid a national revolution.

This is just an excerpt--I'll post it as a book once it gets up to 10k words.

The Revolutionary (an excerpt)...

by drsheridan

Short Story: General Fiction, Historical Fiction, Adventure

Perhaps we all dreamed we’d be heroes. (an excerpt)

Cahal McNamara had never known an Ireland without English occupation, just like everyone in Cooraclare, his home. Just twenty-three years old, he struggles to make sense of the world as Ireland enters a revolution—and, in a decision that will change his life, he joins the IRA in 1916, hoping that he’ll finally have something to fight for.

Three years later, Cahal takes charge of Cooraclare’s flying column when tragedy strikes, and he seems to have found his place: he’s respected by the entire village, and he’s about to marry Molly, his longtime love. But one thing stands in his way: Sinead, his younger sister, with skewed priorities, a sharp tongue, and no regard for her place. When she becomes a courier, Cahal will have to keep his column and Sinead in line, a feat it seems no one can accomplish.

As Ireland struggles to find its footing, Cahal will too struggle to find what’s truly important, struggle to repair relationships already broken.

A companion to Deirdre Sheridan’s novel "The Roses of Cooraclare", "The Revolutionary" is a story of family, politics, and the sacrifices we all must make, in war and peace.
